Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Will Grate Seal really stop harmful airborne mould and bacteria coming from drains?
Answer Yes. In fact Great Seal is currently being tested in hospitals and documented to prove its effectiveness in reducing the incedence and spread of disease. The documentation will be posted on this website when it becomes available.

Q. Do cockroaches actually come out of shower drains & bathroom & laundry floor wates?
Answer Yes. Roaches live in sewers and dark, damp places. In some countries the Cockroach is known as the Water Bug. All cockroach species need water to survive.
The only way to stop roaches entering buildings is to seal off all entrances, and cleanliness.

Q. Do cockroaches make us sick by spreading disease?
Answer Yes. Cockroaches are known to carry diseases such as typhoid, poliomyelitis, dysentery and gastroenteritis.
Some people are allergic to cockroach faeces inhaled as dust particles in the air. Roaches have even been known to cause Asthma in sensitive people.

Q. What about my sink, basin and bath drains?
Answer These waste outlets are built higher in your plumbing structure and furthest from the main pipelines. The only escape for Cockroaches in these areas is back down the drain. If you have any problems here, simply keep the plug in the drain between uses, particularly in drains not used very often.

Q. Will Grate Seal create blockages or stop water flow?
Answer No. GS lets everything out but nothing in. Hair, soap stubs, even burning cigarette butts pass through safely, and water flow is not restricted in any way - except backwards & upwards of course!

Q. Will Grate Seal slip or move too far down the drain?
Answer No. GS has a tiered design so that he vertical surface area against the pipe wall prevents it from moving. If you are installing into the smallest 2 inch pipe, it is recommended that a ring of sylicone be applied. Please see the Installation instructions pdf.

Q. What is back-wash?
Answer Nasty.. If there is a blockage or plumbing fault in the main line one house or apartment down the line from you, then sewage builds up and back-washes into your home's drainage system. Water in the Seal or S-bend is NOT clean water.

Q. How often will I need to clean the Grate Seal? The short answer is NEVER.
Answer Never. Grate Seal is self cleansing in design. However if you are a fastidious house keeper, Grate Seal is easily removed for cleaning.

Q. What volume of water can it handle; is there any restriction to its applications?
Answer A. Grate Seal can cope with large volumes of water. To obtain a watermark approval the product had to undergo independent testing. The flow rate is greater than the maximum flow rate from a tap outlet, as specified in AS/NZS3500. Maximum flow rate through a tap = 18L/minute, there was no overflow when tested at 20L/minute.

Q. Is there a minimum amount of water or flow required to make the Grate Seal work effectively?
Answer Even small amounts of water will activate the valve, this also is part of the testing criteria.

Q. Will it still be necessary to top up floor wastes with water and disinfectants?
Answer No Grate seal is a mechanical seal which creates a barrier between the drainage system and the habitable area.

Q. Why use Grate seal over other products on the market?
Answer Grate Seal is the easiest and fastest to install, and can be RETRO fitted into any drain without replacing existing fittings.
Grate Seal does not need any water in the outlet to be 100% effective.
GS is completely environmentally friendly, protecting our water supplies for generations to come.
GS is maintenance free!

Q. What is Grate Seal made from?
Answer Model GSO1 is produced from a neoprene rubber with excellent characteristics for domestic & most commercial purposes. However we can produce Grate Seal from a material specifically to suit its purpose, for example for an oil refinery we use a nitrile compound. For Hospitals & similar institutions an anti-bacterial compound is used.

Q. Does the rubber last a long time; does it harden or break down from different chemicals?
Answer Rubber has an excellent life expectancy and should the correct material selection be made it will not harden or break down.

Q. How simple is it to install Grate Seal?
Answer Gate Seal is so easy to install, as there is no need for alterations to existing waste outlets, drainage or tiles. Simply Set and Forget!

Q. Does Grate Seal have any Plumbing approvals, if so do you have any reports or Certification?
Answer Yes Grate Seal is a watermark approved product which has a standard written for it. It meets the Australian Standard 3500 which is the plumbing code for Australia and New Zealand.

Q. Is Grate Seal only protected by design coverage or does it also have a patent?
Answer Grate Seal is patented - No: 2008243269. Grate Seal also has a registered design and is Trademark registered.
